The Department of Molecular Medicine, like many other Departments currently active at the University of Pavia, was founded at the end of 2011 by the union of 9 previous Departments or Institutes (minors), existing for several decades (Biochemistry, Physiology, Immunology and General Pathology, Human Genetics, Clinical Biochemistry, Pathology, Cardiology, Hematology and Respiratory Diseases).
Two further points are relevant to understand the genesis and logistics of the Department:
- in Pavia and in other Italian universities, the members of the same academic disciplines are scattered in different Departments;
- one of the key components of the Department, namely the former Institute of Respiratory Diseases, migrated to another Department in 2015 following the death of Prof M. Luisetti, Head of Respiratory Diseases.
As a result, the Department currently comprises members of 8 smaller former Departments/Institutes - currently known as Units - housed in 9 separate buildings on the north side of the city.
